I don't understand the gull movements on the school playing field at the moment. Over forty lesser black-backs arrived just as I was getting ready to go out to the shops late morning. Most were adults, there were three third-year birds and a first-year bird. There were also half a dozen herring gulls — four adults and two second-year birds — and a couple of adult black-headed gulls. As far as I could see they weren't actively feeding, they were just loafing. I got back in time to see the last of the lesser black-backs departing and floating off westwards.
I don't know if there's a group of " local" birds returning every day with whichever individuals that happen to be at the same feeding hole at the time tagging along for the ride or if this is a passage of gulls coming down from breeding grounds up in the hills.
