Winter wonderland

House sparrow

Well, we had us our inch of snow, which didn't take long to degrade into slush. On the plus side the weight of the snow bent the roses and bottlebrush bush so there was a clear view of the feeders.

The spadgers pretty much parked themselves in the roses for most of the morning and spent the afternoon commuting between the embankment bramble patches and the feeders. There's still a bit of flux between the two family groups, the Silver Team were in most of the day joined by birds from the old Tawny Team coming in in ones and twos.

The blue tits, coal tits and starlings were in and out of the garden all day, as we're a pair of robins. It was good to see the goldfinches staying a while instead of flitting in and out and a relief to finally see the first dunnock of the year.

Unsurprisingly the gulls didn't want to know about a snow-bound and frozen school playing field. The magpies and rooks didn't think much of it either.
