The blackcap's been quiet the past few days, which I hope is a sign that he's too busy to sing. The robin's been quieter than usual, just doing the early part of the dawn chorus and matins, the youngster strutting about on the back fence being evidence that he's been busy. The adult dunnocks, great tits and blue tits move through the garden like shadows, their offspring being pretty much independent of them now, and even of each other.
One of the advantages of insomnia is that you can record the phases of the dawn chorus. Aside from the lack of the blackcap, which usually kicks in just before the collared dove, this morning's has been pretty typical.
- 0345: two blackbirds and a robin
- 0415: the blackbirds and robin take a break, the jackdaws wake up
- 0430: the collared dove and a woodpigeons join "my" blackbird, the house sparrows wake up
- Dawn
- 0445: the wren joins the chorus, the carrion crows and ring-necked parakeet make an appearance
- 0500: the blackbird and wren take a break, leaving a chorus of collared dove and woodpigeons, the magpies arrive
- 0530: the wren rejoins the chorus, the starlings turn up
I fell asleep just after half six so I probably missed something but this was the state of play when I woke up again just after half seven. The times have been pretty consistent all month.
