Male great  spotted woodpecker

It was bedlam out in the back garden today after the first seriously cold night of the Winter. The spadgers and blue tits set up camp and stayed by the feeders all day whilst all the other birds came in and out. So far this Autumn there have just been the odd couple of starlings visiting the feeder, today thirteen descended on it. The usual pair of collared doves chased off an interloper. The woodpecker was back again and lingered awhile. Two female blackcaps visited the Mahonia flowers, in the company of a goldcrest.

The cat went out to visit her latrine under the blackcurrant bushes just after lunch. The new starlings flew off in fright, giving the dunnock and a coal tit the opportunity to jump in and have a turn on the fat ball feeder they'd been waiting for for the best part of half an hour. The starlings were back the moment the cat fell off the garden fence and stalked off with her injured dignity.
