It was a mild, grey Christmas morning. The spadgers bustled in and out in small groups, those not jostling about on the feeders rummaged round the ground under the blackcurrant bushes. A pair of coal tits came to visit, I didn't see as much of the great tits and blue tits as usual. For the first time in a week I didn't see any chaffinches, I'm still trying to work out if they're passing through or staying: some days I'll see a lone male or female, there were two males the other day and yesterday it was two males and a female. A flock of goldfinches feeding on the Leylandii cones was a consolation.

For the first time for a week there wasn't a crowd of black-headed gulls on the school playing field first thing in the morning. There are already signs of Spring: a collared dove did display flight circuits of the field and the magpies are renovating the old nest in the ornamental pear tree by the road.
